7+ Pro Tips for Setting Goals

When we plan and strategise we are 42% more likely to achieve success and whilst most business leaders understand the need for strategic planning and implementation less than 50% of the SME sector actually do either and the statistics are even more shocking for the everyday person where only 3% set goals and only 8% of them achieve their goals.

There’s no great mystery how the 8% are successful in achieving their goals, they simply understand how to go about setting them.  Here are 7 Pro Tips to your goal setting success.

A successful goal setting strategy is to apply the acronym SMARTER. Let’s say our goal is to improve our physical fitness.
- First, make our goal specific e.g. I want to improve my physical fitness so I can walk the xyz trail with friends in October.
- Next make it measurable.  Determine your measure, assess it at the start, and then set your target for October xyz date.
- Now review the goal and discern if it is attainable.  It may be helpful to break it into increments and asses each part to ensure it is realistic.
- Next, ask yourself ‘is the goal relevant, is there purpose or a reason for the goal?
- Next be time-bound to the goal e.g. I will start on March 1st ready to walk the trail on October 15th.
- The last 2 steps are to ensure the goal is evaluative and rewarding this means being able to assess your progress along the way and then make sure you feel rewarded when you are successful.  Defining your reward at the same time you set the goal will help you stay accountable and motivated.

Now we can put our goals on steroids by applying the 7Cs which are to claim, maintain a clear focus, get a cheerleader, be courageous, collaborate, act consistently and celebrate
