Staying Strong in Life's 7 Pillars
1 in 4 of us are on the middling to lower end of the mental wellbeing spectrum and whilst NZers live on average to be 80.5 years we do succumb to illnesses that could have been prevented or managed better with some different intentional life changing decisions.
Most of us desire to live better, with more joy and healthier minds and bodies and there are ways we can improve the odds of achieving this and they are bundled into 7 fundamental pillars of life.
In no specific order the pillars are:
- occupational is about gaining satisfaction and achievement from your work or study
- intellectual is about expanding our creative and cultural skills
- physical is the necessity for good nutrition, sufficient quality sleep and regular exercise
- mental includes our self-identify and self-talk
- emotional is all about our feelings
- social is understanding our importance in society and knowing that we have a role to play in our communities
- spiritual is about finding or knowing the meaning and purpose of our existence.
There is no right time or one way to start applying the pillars and it is never too late but the way I’ve applied them over the past few years is to review them before a new year starts and then I build my annual goals around them applying the acronym SMARTER and the 7Cs.
More than 2 million kiwis are in full time employment which means they spend the biggest portion of their awake time at work, so it is critical that employers and employees work together for the benefit of individuals and businesses.
