GenY / Millennials in a Multigenerational Work Team
A multigenerational workforce will strengthen business resilience and grow market share.
Millennials were born 1980 – 1995 making them 26 – 41 years old in 202. GenY was their placeholder name until 2014 when they became officially known as Millennials because many of them were becoming adults as we moved into the 2000s. They make up 50% of our workforce and in my opinion, they are the misunderstood generation often being considered high maintenance where in fact many of us simply haven’t taken the time to understand who they are.
They are tech savvy and continuously connected online. This highly social behaviour satisfies their desire for human connection and collaborative relations. They are our most informed generation, and they value intelligence and results over traditional workplace hierarchical rankings.
Millennials need to be intellectually challenged but their tendency to multi-task can lead them astray. If you are assigning them tasks first set goals that are measurable and attainable for to achieve efficacy and keep them on track and.
This generation has a strong sense of fairness and morality sometimes causing their career path to be a series of short-term employment relationships as they seek great management and a real sense of value and belonging.
They tend to chase success in everything they do, and they will be loyal to the business that offers them development opportunities and an authentic sense of value.
So how do you attract and retain this generation?
1. Get active on social media to reach them and communicate your EVP, Employee Value Proposition.
2. Ensure your communications are mobile friendly because this is how 78% of them will find you.
3.Millennialise your benefit package including training and development opportunities, flexible working hours, cash bonuses and regular and frequent opportunities for open and transparent 2 way communication with their leaders and managers.
