Recruiting Done Right

Are you in an industry sector bereft of potential new hires?  There are several reasons, we have a record number of these sectors including hospitality, aged care, construction, and almost every trade.

7 tips to help you keep your recruiting inhouse.

1. When it comes to vacancy advertising most ads are too wordy, full of information superfluous to the message you are trying to relay which is very simply ‘we are hiring’.  Whilst you are wanting to attract the right applicants you must be careful not to inadvertently lose the right applicant with too much information.

2. Stop trying to hire based on the skills you want the potential hire to bring to the table.  Of course, these are important, but they are not the most important attribute of a new hire, you should be looking for the best fit and LQ learning quotient or ability.

3. Put in place best practice recruiting processes a) have a plan to respond to every application in a timely manner b) your best applicants will probably come in the first week so set up interviews as a matter of priority c) don’t expect an applicant to go through numerous unnecessary interviews, 1-2 is usually sufficient to make your hiring decision d) be swift with a employment offer but be wise about who you make these offers to, never hire because you are desperate e) communicate with every unsuccessful applicant, this builds on your employee brand and frankly is just polite and professional.

4. Communicate your training and development opportunities to promising potential new hires.  This helps them envisage a future with your business and may be the difference in securing them over your competition.

5.Put in place all your employment documents Job Description, Policies and Procedures and Employment Agreement.

6. Have your welcoming and onboarding processes in place and follow them.

7. Conduct a 3-month performance/salary review.  This will help the new hire feel connected and give all parties the opportunity to discuss progress to date.

Getting your hiring activities right will start you off on your journey to a sound employee experience and elevated employee engagement which of course increases productivity therefore profitability, market share growth and business resilience.

Who doesn’t want all that in their business today?
