Your ERS - Training & Development
There are 10 components of your ERS and together they elevate your employer and employee experiences and bolster your employee and business resilience.
Your workers want training and development opportunities and your business benefits when it provides them because employee gains get injected right back into it.
Training and development can happen on the job and be based around an employee’s role or as part of a cross training or peer partnering strategy or it can be in the form of coaching and mentoring. It can also be off the job and provided by a 3rd party and there are innumerable options available but there are 3 important points to consider when making your selection.
3 Important Points
1. Don’t be tempted to apply a cookie cutter approach because people learn differently. There is learning by doing or kinaesthetic learning, audio visual learning including infographics and videos, and reading and writing learning. Also remember that everybody will have a perspective on what training is relevant and of interest to them so discuss and agree on options that work for them and will benefit the business so you can get the best return on your investment.
2. Agree and be clear on what type of training and development opportunity will be pursued, when it will take place and who will be the trainer, mentor, or partner. Also agree on the objectives of the training and the anticipated outcomes and outputs.
3. Document your training and development policy being mindful that it is equitable and then keep it visible and accessible.
Finally, don’t get caught up on objections such as: “What if I invest in training and they leave?” - what if you don’t and they stay?
“What if there is no pathway within our business?” - offer training in an area of personal interest to the employee.
“We can’t afford to invest in training.” – Think creatively, can you initiate a contra arrangement.
Your training and development policy is critical to increasing your employee promotion rates and employee retention. It also enables you to fill gaps created by employee attrition.
